Trees for Colchester (Greenstead Pilot)

Colchester Borough Council is looking for volunteers to join the new Trees for Colchester pilot project in Greenstead, Colchester.

Volunteering is an essential part of this project, so whether you’re a resident or community group in Greenstead, they’d love you to get involved. No experience is necessary and all training will be provided. Continue reading Trees for Colchester (Greenstead Pilot)

Colchester Minecraft

Minecraft is a 3d building game where you have an avatar in a world and you can edit and change that world. It is now the third highest selling computer game title ever and is a giant hit with children. It’s digital Lego! What kid doesn’t love Lego? Microsoft has recently paid $2bn to own this title and created a specific educational version of it intended for use in schools. Using data taken from a NASA shuttle mission I’ve shoehorned an accurate map of Colchester into the game and built a quick version of Camulodunum on the map. Schools will be able to use this map in class to study local history safely, again and again for less money than it costs to take them all up town on the bus once! Instead of looking at where the chariot track used to be they can get on a horse and race each other around a replica of the track.

Salary Brook Country Park

In the recent local plan there is a written outline of a new country park to be created as a buffer between Greenstead and the new garden community. The park will cover the Salary Brook corridor and Churn Wood. It is written in the plan the park will be a minimum size of 70 hectares (700,000m2). A quick estimate of the area of Churn Wood gives 25 hectares (250,000m2). Subtracting Churn Wood from the total leaves an area of 45 hectares (450,000m2). The length of the Salary Brook corridor is roughly 1.5km. Divide the remaining area by the length and you’ve got a strip 300m wide (450,000/1,500 = 300).

The local plan hasn’t been formally accepted, there’s no actual evidence to suggest where this park is going but a rough outline of the figures above is shown below.

Salary Brook Country Park Dimensions

There’s still no formal plans but here’s another image I’ve been passed from the Wivenhoe Independents.

Please sign and share the petition to say we want whole of the Salary Brook valley made in to a country park.
